Copying
Copying
We are able to provide copies of a number of the records we look after. The type of copy will depend on:
- The format of the original
- The size
- The condition
- What you need the copy for.
Copies are only provided for private study and research. If you are wanting to publish an image of any of our records (including on websites) you will need our permission and to acknowledge Tyne & Wear Archives as the source. A reproduction fee may be incurred depending on the proposed use. Visit our image licensing page for more information.
We will try to provide a suitable copy whilst considering the need to preserve the original for the future. Copyright law may, on occasion, prevent us from supplying a copy.
Photocopies
We can photocopy in A4 or A3 size, in black and white only. Unfortunately we don't photocopy any originals which are large than A3 or items that could be potentially damaged by the process, such as parchment, photographs and volumes. We can offer scanning or photography as alternatives.
There is strictly no self-service photocopying available. Collection of copies is preferred, however we are able to post at an additional cost.
Other Copying Services
Digital copies can be printed in A3 and A4 size, on photographic paper. We can also provide as a digital file (jpeg) on a CD or email.
Documents up to A2 in size can be scanned and we take digital photography of larger items. Images can be enhanced and at a higher quality subject to negotiation and cost.
Copies from microforms can be produced in A3 and A4. If visiting in person you are able to do this yourself with the guidance of our staff. We can copy for you, but this will incur a charge.
Once a document has been microfilmed, we only offer copies from the film.
We offer copies of larger flat documents such as maps and plans up to A0 width. Please note they cannot be processed instantly.
For a £10 one-day licence we can offer you the opportunity to take your own digital photographs (no flash or tripod) for personal use.
If you are needing a number of records copied, we may suggest microfilming as the cheapest and most practical option. Please note you will need access to a microfilm reader in order to use your copy.
